There are dozens of depression supplements on the market today. You can’t try them all, trust me I tried!  I suffer from depression and tried all kinds of things ranging from prescription medication, supplements, massage, sleeping pills…..You name it, I tried it.  I finally got fed up and decided to do some research into what really works and doesn’t have terrible side effects. If you are like me, I had terrible side effects of mood swings & sexual dysfunction when taking prescription meds.  Even worse, some weren’t covered by my insurance or even with my co-pay cost me a fortune. That’s when I decided to look into a depression supplement.

I literally looked at almost 100 different things that I found on the internet that supposedly were good depression remedies. Most of these depression supplements had little information besides a couple people claiming they worked. In my googling, here are the “best of the best” when it comes to depression supplements. All of the depression supplements below have a 75% or higher user reported effectiveness on WebMD. That means each of these have a higher user rating that the prescription meds my Doctor gave me!

*Update* – I found another depression supplement that I really like, so this is now Top 6 depression supplements :)

Enlifta depression supplement

1.   SAM-e (s-adenosyl methionine)

– This is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is used to make serotonin and other important neurotransmitters in the brain. It is these neurotransmitters that are involved in making you feeling happy. It has been used for decades in many countries outside the US for treatment of depression. Why it took so long for it to reach the USA, I have no idea.  Apparently, many people due to their genes, don’t make enough SAMe.  As an added bonus, studies indicate SAMe may help pain and improve function in arthritis and improve liver function.  Users on WebMD report it to be 80% effective for depression.

2.  Specialized Folic Acid

– Folate is a vitamin needed to make all the subtances in the brain that make you feel happy.  This specialized form of folate is called 5-MTHF. Many people have deficiency in the enzymes that break down regular folate in food into the active form of folate (5-MTHF.  Users on WebMD report it to be 85% effective for depression.  There are many brands of this, but after my research, I prefer Quatrefolic which is a patented version of 5-MTHF.

3. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)

– This was the first natural depression supplement that I tried. It seemed to work pretty well but worked a ton better when I put it with these other ingredients. It’s a naturally occurring amino acid that is a primary building block for serotonin and melatonin, two neurotransmitters naturally produced by the body. Melatonin is really important for proper sleep cycles and is prescribed by many Doctors.  Additional studies support its use in fibromyalgia or chronic pain and possibly headaches.   Users on WebMD report it to be 86% effective for depression.  For me it was 100%!

4. John’s Wort

– This naturally occurring herb has been used for centuries in the treatment of depression. It is actually prescribed by Doctors as a depression medicine in Germany. It helps to boost levels of neurotransmitters needed to feel happy, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.  The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine supports its use for mild to moderate depression.  Studies also support its use for treatment of PMS.  Users on WebMD report it to be 77% effective for depression.

5. Saffron

– This naturally occurring spice harvested from a flower has been used for centuries in the treatment of depression. Studies indicate it is just as effective as 2 commonly used antidepressant agents.  As an added bonus, studies indicate it may be helpful in Alzheimer’s disease and PMS.  Users on WebMD report it to be 94% effective for depression.

6. Arctic Root (Rhodiola Rosea)

– A naturally occurring root that has been used for centuries for a variety of health concerns, including depressed mood. Like other supplements mentioned, it increases the amount of neurotransmitters in the brain needed to feel happy.  Other studies indicate it may be helpful for fighting off fatigue and treating anxiety.  Users on WebMD report it to be 93% effective for depression.

CONCLUSIONS:

– The above ingredients all have higher ratings on WebMD than most typical agents prescribed to treat depression.  In combination, these are going to help much more than on their own.  If you look around, you can find all these supplements available on their own but then you have to buy 6 different pill bottles which is expensive and involves taking lots of pills every day.  Whenever you buy any supplement, make sure its made in the USA. I would never put anything in my body that’s made in China or India because their purity standards can be lacking to say the least.  The depression supplement I am currently using contains all these ingredients plus a few more is Enlifta. It’s inexpensive compared to buying each ingredient separately and was formulated by a Board Certified US psychiatrist and is produced by a FDA registered facility in the USA. Give it a try yourself, you can find it at www.enlifta.com. I’ve been using it for a few months and looking back now, wish I would have found it sooner.

Please leave me some comments if you have tried Enlifta or know of other depression supplements that I should include on my list!
